Forty-Five: Witching Hour

Somehow she knew she was dreaming.

Aubrey stepped inside the structure.

Who was that hovering above the gaping coffin?

Getting closer. The apparition started to look familiar.

Jakub?

Her heart raced as she looked down on him.

He shot upright.

She recoiled, nearly falling as she backed away.

His body stiff as a corpse, he twisted toward her.

“Aubreeeeeeeeeeeeey,” he whispered, his voice becoming distorted, demonic.

The scar on his neck visibly pulsated.

She jerked awake.

Damn nightmares…

Later, she and Hunter snacked on one another.

There was a difference between Hunter’s French kisses and Vaclav’s. Hunter’s tongue drilled deeper.

Hunter tried to stick his tongue near her throat. It felt almost… weird.

Either way was nice, of course.

He sucked on her tongue, gliding it in and out of his mouth. She rolled her eyes back. He was driving her crazy with desire.

“Mmmm. You want the big bad wolf to jam his big bad dick—”

“Yes,” she said.

They didn’t hear someone entering the room.

“Stop banging your brains out,” Lucius said. “Vaclav can see everything and he’s losing his mind.”

Startled, they separated.

Cold eyes stared, daring them not to comply.

The ensued minutes were quiet, awkward. Anxiety churned in Aubrey’s gut.

Aubrey finally nodded.

Lucius spun around and left the room.

They looked at each other.

“Fuck ’em both. C’mere,” Hunter said.

Aubrey didn’t waste any time complying.

At the edge of Shadowvale, Rogue troops and their leader approached a dwelling situated on a peak.

Rumor had it that the Shadows were using it as sanctuary.

There were only a few Shadows left, or so Lucius had thought.

Lucius told Jasper to lead the rogues into the lair and kill the remaining Shadows.

Seemed simple enough.

Rumor also swirled about the Shadows’ election of a new leader. Was it he who stood in front of the dwelling?

Jasper and the rogues advanced.

Then he stopped, motioning for the troops to halt behind him.

“Are you the new leader?”

He grinned; then nodded over to a nearby boulder.

Jasper glanced in that direction.

Fire ignited. Jasper looked puzzled.

 From out of nowhere, she appeared.

It was the stupid witch. In all likelihood her ‘powers’ still sucked.

“You’re no more threatening than a newborn kitten, angel face!” 

“Enter the lair!” Jasper told the rogues.

Coincidentally, the new Shadow leader nodded at the mage. It was an unspoken commandment.

The witch peered down; then threw her arms up in the air.

It was very quiet and still. A fantastic light radiated below, rising up.

The soldiers’ flesh melted away.

A crazed look of glee flourished upon her face.

Eyes glowing in their gruesome sockets, the dead undead stood amidst the smoke and debris.

“You fucking bitch.”

Ice-laden red eyes stared through him.

And the leader merely smiled.

Disintegrated into skeletons, the soldiers lay across the ground like someone’s morbid collection.

She stretched, as if nothing spectacular had just happened.

Then she thrust a hand forward to cast another spell. A Fireball erupted next to Jasper.

“Lucius, we’re totally screwed.” Flames licked at his clothes before consuming him.

The witch glowered at him.

In a few minutes, he was nothing but bones.

Meanwhile on the other side of Shadowvale, Lucius experienced a sudden, overwhelming feeling of dread.

He knew something had gone wrong…

At the Haas manor, Hunter slowly rode Aubrey. Then he lurched forward, making the bureau collapse on one side.

Keep Their Heads Ringing by Dr. Dre blared on the adjacent stereo.

Wow, was that song fitting.

Hunter moved until climax. It was his millionth orgasm that week.

Afterward, he said something Aubrey never expected.

“I love you.”

She started to reply, but stopped. Actually she didn’t know what to say.

Aubrey stepped away from him.

As a tear escaped, she gazed at her wedding ring.

Vaclav.

Her wedding vows from forever ago played in her head… along with the accompanying, beautiful poem:

You shall be together when the wings of death scatter your days. You shall be together even in your silent memory. But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
and let the winds of the heaven dance between you. Love one another, but make not a bondage of love. Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Did she really want her love for Vaclav to die? Did she really want to replace him with Hunter? Was true love really that easily interchangeable?

I changed some of the lyrics of the Dr. Dre song to something a little less offensive.  🙂
