One Hundred and Thirty-Five…

One Hundred and Thirty-Five: War at Home

Another war has come to its anti-climactic close.

Though the curse ended, the Haas family still suffered. Suffered from the loss of Azura, the intense guilt Reznik felt since giving her up to Nicholas, and new mental scars added to the old ones.

Lauren hated Reznik. Vaclav didn’t know what to think about the entire situation. The rest of the Haases stayed quiet, as if in shock. Most of the extended family moved out of the manor. Tristan and Cody were the only ones left but they planned to leave within the next day or two.

And there were a bunch of ex-lycans wandering around town, confused about what happened and wondering how they ended up in random areas. Reznik held a conference at a warehouse to explain the situation and reassure them everything was okay now.

Sick of all the supernatural drama, several mortals threatened to leave town, and did leave.

The entire situation was a *facepalm* of astronomical proportions.

Rez lingered in the living room. There was only one more thing for him to do.

It involved his son Cody.

Cody’s deep voice drifted from the dining room.

“I swear I never meant for any of this shit to happen,” Cody said. “It was all a stupid plan to begin with. I never should’ve trusted Brent or Esha. Justin was the one who took the skull, then Uncle Hunter gave it back to the witch. After that it was too late.”

“I’m sure you didn’t mean for this to happen,” Vaclav replied. “Although you’ve put our family through hell, along with everyone in Shadowvale. You were selfish and inconsiderate. I know you want to be leader of your own Lycan Clan, but it’s not as easy or as simple as it seems. Being leader takes much responsibility. You’re entirely too immature for that.”

Cody’s head lowered.

“Cody.”

His son turned. Cold ruby eyes met Reznik’s.

“You’re damn right this was all your fault, you little self-absorbed shit.”

“But… it turned out all good. Everyone’s okay. Shadowvale’s back to normal.”

“Is it? Is it really? You’ve no idea how badly you’ve torn apart this family.”

“Me? You’re the one who keeps trading Azura for Shadowvale’s welfare. Seems like you’ve done a pretty good job at tearing apart the family too, Dad.”

Rez kicked his son in the stomach.

Cody’s rear thumped to the floor. He groaned as he held his belly.

Reznik stared until Cody looked away.

“Whether or not you want to own up to this mess, you caused this. That’s a fact,” Rez said.

“Reznik, leave him alone. He didn’t know this would happen,” Lauren said.

“Bull. He knew exactly what would happen.”

“So what are you gonna do? Kick me again? How proud you must be to be my father.”

Rez stepped forward.

“Leave him alone! He’s your son, Reznik.”

“No son of mine would cause such a fucked-up disaster.”

“Uh, yeah. Of course he would because he’s your son.”

Cody hoisted from the floor and strolled past his father.

“Yeah Dad. After all, I am my father’s son. The poisoned apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, does it?” His footsteps faded away.

Reznik observed his image in the mirror.

Yeah. The poisoned apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Owls hooted.

“Now what do we do? It’s all over.”

“I know. It’s all over and I’m still pregnant.”

“Do you regret it?”

“What? Having a baby or making love?” she asked.

“Both.” He pivoted around.

“I don’t know. I don’t think so. I’m a little worried about having a baby.” She shrugged. “But I don’t want an abortion.”

“I don’t either. I’d feel wrong about it. I’d never be part of killing a baby that we brought into this mess on purpose. The baby never asked for this.”

“Yeah.”

“What about us making love? Do you regret that?” Lucifer knew he was being needy again, but he didn’t care at this point.

“No. I don’t regret us making love, Lucifer.” She hesitated. “Even if there wasn’t a curse, I’d still want to make love with you.”

Lucifer stood in shock, his feet glued to the floor. Over and over those coveted words flowed through his mind. Those words he’d been awaiting for years.

“Oh… oh my gosh…” she heaved, burped a few times. “Sorry. Can’t talk now. Gotta—puke.”

Mila bolted.

“Uh, sorry you’re sick.” Jeez. How lame. And now I feel bad for getting her knocked up. Great.

“Lucifer, why is there a strange girl in our bathroom throwing up?”

Slowly, nervously, Lucifer faced his father. His mind raced.

“She’s just a friend from L—Lunira. She didn’t get hit by the curse, but she has a bad case of the flu.”

“Mm-hm,” Vaclav hummed as he headed for the door.

“What? You don’t believe me?”

“No. Unfortunately there’s other things to worry about right now. I’ll deal with you and your sick girlfriend later.” He left.

Why did he enunciate the word ‘sick’? As if he knew Mila was actually pregnant? Lucifer wondered.

“Damn.”

Hushed voices. Sounds of those freaks moving about.

Those noises kept Azura awake, pissing her off since she was so sleepy. She hadn’t slept well in days.

She had no idea what day it was, or the date. It was like time had stopped since arriving at the mansion. Her life had also stopped.

Azura no longer had a family. They’d abandoned her like so much trash.

Noises, noises. Effing noises driving me crazy. This whole place drives me crazy. And Nicholas…

She got up.

Azura crept into the living area. An odd red light radiated from the next room through the tiny window.

She approached.

A little voice told her not to look. Another little voice told her to definitely peek.

Afraid of what she’d see, Azura peered in.

A guy on the floor. Tied up maybe? He looked terrified.

Was it a shrine or something? What kind of sick religion was this?

Cold, stoic faces stared ahead.

“Don’t do this. I have a fiancée… we have—plans. I can’t die.”

Nicholas flung his head back and let out an enormous, piercing howl.

“This man shall be sacrificed to appease our Lord Nicholas, the demigod of all Lycanthropes. He shall fulfill our lord’s lust for blood!”

Nicholas lurched, swiped his claws over the man’s face. The stranger’s head exploded with blood as he toppled over.

Thick silence followed the atrocity. Then Nicholas snarled and plunged to the man’s throat.

Horrific gurgling expelled as Nich tore at the stranger’s throat, shaking his head to and fro.

Azura wasn’t sure at what moment she stopped watching. She simply found herself gaping at doors, each one a possible way out of this nightmare.

She ran.

Oh Jesus! How can I get out of this maze?!

Every door led to another corridor. Every corridor led to another door.

She tossed a glance back.

Going somewhere?” a female voice chimed.

Wait… how…?

“So sweet, attractive Azura wishes to leave the Dark Prince’s castle? Is that it?”

Vigorously, she shook her head no. Millificent laughed.

“I’ll take care of my darling Azura now,” Nicholas said, his voice low.

Azura couldn’t stop her body from shaking.

“Come, my Darling Dearest. Come and let your demigod husband take care of you.”
